TC5.1. deals with aspects of theories, modelling, methodologies, tools, applications related to automation, information and communication technologies needed to CONTROL the manufacturing plant within the e-enterprise.
While building on and continuing to support our successful activities in the past, TC5.1 is targeting a longstanding issue in manufacturing plant control by investigating new manufacturing plants as advocated by "Factory of the Future" or "Industry 4.0" visions.

The TC is addressing the automation scientific challenges and issues raised by the IMS paradigm in order to apply MEMS, MECHATRONICS, MES, MAS, HMS and e-technologies to digitally control with more agility the entire manufacturing chain, from design through manufacturing, to maintenance and service, over the whole product and processes life cycle.

Working Groups

  • Working Group 1 : Intelligent Manufacturing Systems (Acronym WG  IMS)- Chair: Yuval COHEN

The working group investigates and develops novel solutions for manufacturing control systems that merge know-how from control engineering, software engineering and complex adaptive systems research. This results in novel designs promising scale-ability, re-usability, integrate-ability and robustness. Efforts focus on validation of the concepts through realistic testing campaigns on industrial test cases. To this end, a suitable benchmarking platform and technology is developed. Recent efforts are using Erlang (developed by telecom industry;, to develop a next-generation benchmarking platform. Erlang offers development efforts and durations that are four to ten times lower when compared to conventional technologies (C++, Java, C#). On a more fundamental level, the concepts of emergent and self-organizing systems, often in designs inspired by biological systems, are addressed. Concerning industrial relevance, the working group looks into ‘visibility’ as an explicit objective next to designing systems based on ‘future-proof components’.

  • Working Group 2 : Dependable Manufacturing Systems and Discrete Event System (Acronym WG DMDES) - Chair : Jean Marc FAURE

The working group DMDES (Dependable Manufacturing and Discrete Event Systems) is a WG common to TC 1.3 and 5.1 that is aiming at promoting research works in the domain of modeling, analysis and synthesis of critical manufacturing and complex systems which can be represented as DES, so as to improve the overall dependability of these systems

    The Working Group DMDES is a WG common to TC1.3. and TC 5.1. that is aiming at promoting research works in the domain of modeling, analysis and synthesis of critical manufacturing and complex systems which can be represented as DES, so as to improve the overall dependability of these systems. The main research issues which are addressed are:

    • Formal synthesis, verification and test methods for design, implementation, validation and certification of dependable automation system
    • Formal safety analysis,
    • Dependability of networked automation systems,
    • Fault Detection and Isolation (FDI), diagnosis, Prognosis, Reconfiguration of DES.

  • Working Group 3: Advanced Maintenance Engineering, Services and Technology (Acronym WG AMEST) - Chair: Marco MACCHI
  • This working group is addressing the general problem of "maintenance engineering, services and technology". It aims at overcoming the divide situation among maintenance related disciplines and actors. In that way, its main research objectives are to develop a general framework for the (advanced) maintenance area, to generate perspectives of the future trends in maintenance, intelligent maintenance but also to promote Maintenance as a Science and to define a research agenda in the maintenance area. The maintenance topics of interest for this WG are the following:
